Uni-Compartmental.
Bi-compartmental Knee Arthroplasty
The knee joint is a cluster of three small compartments, namely the Outer (1), Inner (2), and Knee-Cap (3), compartment. Interestingly knee osteoarthritis (OA) has been described as highly segmental, in other words, wear and tear of the knee has a strong tendency to restrict itself to a particular compartment, most commonly the inner one.
Unicompartmental Knee Replacement is a surgical procedure done to replace only the worn-out inner compartment of the knee. Unlike total knee replacement where the entire joint is replaced, in Un-compartmental knee Replacement at least 70% of the knee joint is preserved.
What is Patello-Femoral (Knee-Cap) Replacement?
Sometimes the Knee-Cap compartment alone can wear out which happens generally after trauma or developmental defects. In these cases, only the Knee-Cap compartment is replaced and the rest of the joint is preserved.
