What is Medial Patello-Femoral Ligament (MPFL)?
MPLF is the structure on the inner aspect of the knee which connects the Knee-Cap to the thigh bone and gives stability to the Knee-Cap.
What happens if the MPFL is torn and how is it managed?
A knee injury can sometimes lead to an MPFL tear, which can cause Knee Cap instability. A fresh injury can be treated non-surgically with plaster application whereas, repeated episodes of instability need surgical intervention.
What is the surgical treatment for repeated Knee-Cap instability caused by MPFL tear?
The surgical procedure for MPFL tear is called MPFL reconstruction which has good results and the hamstring tendon is usually taken as the graft. Patients usually return to normal activities 3 to 6 weeks after surgery.
