What is ACL?
The ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament) is the main stabilizing ligament of the knee joint. Injury to the ACL is one of the most common injuries to the knee.
What Happens if the ACL is Torn?
The knee becomes unstable while abruptly changing direction. Many have stated that ACL injury is career-ending for athletes. Ireland calls this a “heart attack of the knee.”
Is there Any Long Term Effect on the Knee Because of the ACL Injury?
With time the knee with torn ACL will embark on a course of progressive degeneration leading to early arthritis.
What is the Treatment for the Torn ACL?
The only successful treatment is reconstructing the ligament using the patient’s tissues available around the knee joint.
What are the Available Methods for ACL Reconstruction and Which Method is More Beneficial for Me?
Open and arthroscopic (key-hole) methods are the two available techniques for ACL reconstruction.
Key-hole technique is more beneficial because of
a) small incision,
b) less bleeding,
c) less pain,
d) invisible scar,
e) faster recovery after surgery
What are the Graft Options Available & Which is More Ideal? Why?
a) Bone patellar tendon b) Hamstrings are the two graft options available for reconstructing the ACL. A Hamstrings graft is ideal as knee pain while kneeling down, knee-cap fracture, and knee-cap arthritis are some of the worried problems associated with a bone-patellar tendon graft.
What is the Recommended Technique for the Graft Placement?
Unlike the conventional trans-tibial technique, the trans-portal technique helps to place the graft in a more anatomical position. Graft positioning is the key factor for proper knee function and restoration of the physiologic kinematics of the knee joint in ACL reconstruction.
What are Bio - Absorbable Implants?
Bio-absorbable implants are the once which gradually gets dissolves into the body tissues. The advantages are a) there is no need for later implant removal, and b) unlike metal screws, the bio absorbable screws do not distort the images of CT or MRI scans.
